Sweet Tomato – Dates Chutney Recipe

By Asha

Sweet Tomato Chutney is a delicious dessert after  a meal and is served best with a pappad. It is very easy to make and also the Bengali five spices that is used in this recipe brings out a fantastic flavour. The spices typically used are Fenugreek seeds, Radhuni, Nigella seeds, Fennel seeds and Cumin seeds in equal parts. It is not just sweet but also healthy as it includes tomatoes, dates. cashews and raisins.

Ingredients for Sweet Tomato – Dates Chutney Recipe

  • Tomatoes – 6 (medium) (sliced in 8 pieces)
  • Kismis(raisins) – ½ cup
  • Sugar – 1 ½ cup
  • Kaju (cashews) – 2 tbsp (broken)
  • Paanch phoron (Bengali five spices) – 1 tsp
  • Dates(khajur) – 6- 7 pieces

Procedure for preparing Sweet Tomato – Dates Chutney Recipe

Heat 1 tbsp oil in a pan and add paanch phoron and let it splutter. Now add the tomatoes and and cook them till the water reduces. Now add the dates and cook till the dates are cooked properly. Smash the tomatoes and dates in between and add the raisins. Once the Tomato puree becomes thick  add the sugar and cashews.  Once the chutney becomes thick check seasoning and remove from heat. Serve with pappad.

Note – I generally make a powder of Radhuni, fennel seeds,  Paanch phoron (2 tbsp each)and 10-12 Dry red chillies after roasting them slightly, and then I garnish the Tomato chutney with ½ tsp of this powder. This gives it a fantastic aroma.
