Jain Alu Dum is a pure vegetarian adaptation of the original Alum Dum, it is easy to prepare and requires readily available ingredients. It’s best suited for a light dinner.
The followers of Jainism, the people following strict vegetarian diet (niramish) do no use onion, garlic, etc in their food, so, it is called Jain food.
Ingredients for Jain Alu Dum Recipe
- Potatoes – 5 big (peeled and cubed in medium size)
- Ginger paste – 2 tablespoon
- Chilli powder – 1 tsp
- Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
- Jeera powder – 1/4 tsp
- Garam masala – 2 tsp
- Bay leaf – 2
- Oil – 2 tbsp
- Salt to taste
- Water as required
Procedure for preparing Jain Alu Dum Recipe
Make a paste of ginger, chilli powder, turmeric powder, garam masala and cumin powder.
Heat oil in a pan/kadhai and add bay leaf and then the prepared paste to it and sauté till the masala is cooked well. To this add the cubed potatoes and mix well. Now add enough water and salt and cook the potatoes. When the required gravy consistency is obtained, check seasoning and remove from fire.
